notice (noun, no-tice, \ ˈnoʊtɪs \) of lockout (noun, lock-out, \ ˈlɑːkaʊt \)

Definition: is a document that is prepared and signed by an employer before being filed to the appropriate government agency. This notice explains the employer’s intention to impermanently cease all the company’s operations and close down its premises. Such a notice is ordinarily filed after the negotiations between the organization’s labor union and the employer himself have led to a dead end and were broken off. The lockout is lifted once either one of the two parties is ready to compromise, or if they find a new way to resolve the issue at hand.

In a Sentence:

  1. I’ve just heard that Mr. Livingston has filed a notice of lockout. I knew that the negotiations with our union were tough, but I had no idea things were this bad.
  2. The owner of Brett’s Steel has informed the leaders of the worker’s union that if they don’t budge on the ventilation issue, he’ll send a notice of lockout to the government agency. Such a move is surprising, considering that the employer is obviously in the wrong here.
