In the book 1984 by George Orwell, love and sex represents a significant resemblance to homosexual discrimination in our society today. Big brother condemns a law on all citizens that love itself is forbidden, let alone - the pleasure of sex. Any marriage between party members would be trailed by the committee, and needed approval. Consent would be automatically denied if the couple gave the impression there was affection towards each other. All marriages between Party members had to be approved by a committee appointed for the purpose, and—though the principle was never clearly stated—permission was always refused if the couple concerned gave the impression of being physically attracted to one another. “ (83) Sexual intercourse was viewed as repulsive, desire would be considered thought-crime, and pleasure was rebellion. The only excuse for sex was reproduction to feed into the party. “The only recognized purpose of marriage was to beget children for the service of the Party.
Sexual intercourse was to be looked on as a slightly disgusting minor operation, like having an enema. ” (83-84) The Christian Church believes that homosexuality is a sin, and therefore marriage should be banned. Some of that particular society has created an uncomfortable environment for homosexual people. Not only are they being publicly discriminated against, constitutional laws degrade them and forbid them to marry someone they love. Jadon Higganbothan was a 4-year-old boy who was shot several times by this “law father,” Peter Lucas Moses.
Peter was a religious leader whom thought his 4-year-old son was gay. (thenewcivilrightsmovement. com) Like this story, and many others, the deception of homosexuality to some is frowned upon and looked at as something wrong. In 1984, the reader may find it shocking how love is more of a bad thing then good. But in all reality, it is very relevant to our particular society. In conclusion, homosexuality is simply love that is frowned upon from the public and constitutional laws; whereas love in general is looked at as the exact same way – in a non-fiction book.
