This book is talking about an adventure of a boy called Brian Robeson. He is thirteen-year-old. He is on his way to visit his father, a mechanical engineer in the oil fields of Canada. He fly to Canada with a single engine Cessna 406 bush plane. On their way to the airport, his mother gives him a hatchet. At first, he doesn't want to wear it, but his mother is so insistent that he relents.
When the planes fly to the sky, luckily the pilot allows him to try the controls and fly the plane himself. At first, Brian is afraid but enjoys the experience of being a pilot. Suddenly, the pilot has a heart attack. Brian touches the chest of him to see if he's still alive. He feels no heartbeat and sees no respiration. Therefore Brian decides to control the plane by himself. Brian works hard to land the plane as softly as possible. At last, the plane crash into the lake. He is the only person who is still alive.
He only has a hatchet with him. He survives in the wild and he needs to solve a lot of problem. For example, when he is finding food in a raspberry patch, he sees a bear. In order to collect to raspberry, he needs to watch the bear carefully while he is collecting food. In addition, when he is sleeping, he is attacked by porcine. He is hurt by the quills of porcine. He cries loudly. At last, he realizes that crying cannot solve the problems. He starts to use positive attitude to solve the problem. He also to try makes fire to cook.
Finally, he knows how to use axe to strike a stone and make sparks and he some uses birch bark to ignite the spark to make fire. Furthermore although the taste of turtle eggs is bad, he needs to eat the egg. Moreover, he finds that there are many fish in the river. But he finds that is difficult to catch the fish with bare hands so he makes a fish spear to catch fish and he also makes a bow and arrow to shoot the bird and eat it. At last he decides to go to the broken body of the plane to find if there is anything that can help him to survive.
After trying many times, Brain use logs to make raft. He rows the raft to the airplane and he finds a pack inside it. There are many useful items inside the pack, includes sleeping bag, sleeping pad, cook sets, matches, first-aid kit, fishing kit and emergency transmitter. He tries switching it on. At last, an airplane which is past by, it receives the signal and lands on lake. Brain is saved. After this case, becomes a nature thoughtful and smart boy.
