Gothic elements in “Frankenstein”

The man was always interested in everything mystical. Horrible, fantastic texts are mentioned in the early folklore of different countries, but only partially. Perhaps this is due to a small degree of study of the surrounding world. Everything unknown, all the unusual scares the person, but passing through the prism of his imagination finds fantastic forms. The novel "Frankenstein, or modern Prometheus" was perceived as interesting reading; then over time, the image found a symbolic gothic meaning.

1) a special chronotope and a frighteningly mysterious atmosphere in which the actions of the novels unfold; 

2) characterization of characters in the moments of emotional crises that border the pathological states of the psyche (insanity, manic-depressive syndrome, suicidal crisis, various boundary states of the psyche); 

3) anxiety, everyday manifestations of which constitute an important component of the spiritual and psychological experience of characters; 

4) the tragic evil of the fate of the protagonists, which are foreseen and predetermined by the actions of their unaffiliated forces.

The Gothic topos defines the special "rules of the game" in the Gothic novel. That is a traditional field of activity of the heroes, which determines their roles, their features, the nature of actions and reactions. Man becomes the center of a struggle between good and evil; the situation develops power on personal forces over man, that restricts her freedom to fatal "rules of the game." Victor Frankenstein is a young, brilliant, scientists who are obsessed with finding the secret of giving life. He works alone in his laboratory, and he creates a living being out of the organs of dead man. 

Frankenstein achieves his goal and creates an artificial organism, similar to man, but his scientific victory does not bring him joy. The powerful giant created by him enters the world with the hope of serving the people, making friends with them, but without finding himself among them, becomes an enemy of humanity and strikes his first blows on his creator. Frankenstein's genial discovery turns against him, as the people closest to him die. On his own experience, he is convinced that the glorified enlightenment of the omnipotence of reason conceals not only good but also evil. Spending a lot of time to create an artificial person, Frankenstein devotes his life to its destruction, thinking in this way to atone blame for humanity.

There are lots of elements in Gothic Horror novel such as the darkness, “spooky castles, pathetic fallacy, ominous portents,” the supernatural, mystery, and suspense. Moreover, Gothic novels “originates from gothic architecture” so Frankenstein is also represented the archetypes of modern horror writing. Besides, the birth of synthetic living thing will bring troubles, which related to the dangers of technology and science. Due to the birth of the monster, the protagonist, Victor, not only infringes the authority of God but also breaks the law of theology in the society.
