The Director is the powerful character. He has many opportunities. It was the Director, who exiled Bernard to Iceland. Linda called him Tomakin. He was her sexual partner and a father of John. The act of natural birth, to which he was related, was a severe crime in their society. For that reason, Tomakin had a secret, vulnerable place, which made him feel depressed and ashamed. He had a high position in that dystopian society, however, lost his reputation and status when Linda uncovered the truth about John’s father. The author of the novel uses him as a plot device.
