A Wrinkle in Time Short Essay

A Wrinkle in Time is the story of Meg Murry, a high-school-aged girl who is transported on an adventure through time and space with her younger brother Charles Wallace and her friend Calvin O'Keefe to rescue her father, a gifted scientist, from the evil forces that hold him prisoner on another planet. Meg is on a journey through time and space. She led by three former stars, that are now shape-shifters, and she learns that individuality and a right to free will are very important.

Meg and Charles Wallace are the outcasts of their family. Charles Wallace is very smart, but acts dumb in public, so that people wont treat him as harshly. He is very confident, and sure of himself, which can act as a fault to him. Meg has no friends and is only understood by her little brother (Charles). Meg is constantly ousted because of her faults: her anger, impatience, and lack of self-confidence. Calvin is able to communicate with numerous beings and is very popular and very liked.

Meg, Charles, and Calvin have to rescue the Murrys’ father on Camazotz. Everything on Camazotz is very undistinguished. The houses are the same, the people are the same, and they do every thing in rhythm. There is one mind on this planet, called “IT”, which is represented by a large [disembodied] brain. The people of this planet have boring, unhappy lives, without any free will, and that is part of the reason why “the Black Thing” (evil) is all over the planet.

Their father has been trapped there for years, and people from home are making assumptions that their father has run off with another woman, but the Murrys know, and are very hopeful, that he will return. They find him and rescue him from Camazotz, but Charles Wallace is captured by “IT”, so they have to rescue him. The two themes of this story are love and hate. An example of hate in this story is the 'black thing,' that is powered by hate that they have o fight during the entire story, and an example of love is when Meg has to bring her brother out of a trance, and she says how much she loves him. Hence, A Wrinkle in Time is about a young family of four that loses their father when he messes up with fifth dimensional teleportation. Two of the children and a friend go on a journey through time and space, in an effort to find their father. This book contains a powerful message about the power of love and the need to fight the darkness of ignorance and conformity. On another level, it is also the story of a misfit who discovers her own abilities.
