Son of Stefan Kumalo, Absalom Kumalo left his family to move to Johannesburg, and since the beginning of the novel, he has disappeared since that time. The main part of the novel is dedicated to the search for Stephen Absalom, who left the place in place in Johannesburg. When Stefan finds his son, he finds out that Absalom was sent to the reformer and received a young pregnant girl. The main reason why Absalom's absence is that he killed Arthur Jarvis when he, Johannes Paphour and his cousin John tried to steal his house. However, Absalom finds guilty for a crime and repents, while others do not. Despite acknowledging his guilt for the crime, the court brought Absalom Kumalo to death through hanging.
