Algernon is a small mouse which is used by scientists and doctors for experiments. It is the first mouse who shows positive results after the surgery. It starts finding the correct path through the maze. This progress allows doctors to expect the same result after the human surgery with Charlie. Indeed, Gordon and Algernon are simple guinea pigs for others. When the man understands this, he lets the mouse escape from the cage as if trying to do the same. Algernon dies at the end which means that the experiment isn’t successful for a long perspective. The reader understands that the same destiny is waiting for Charlie.
