Alice’s mother is a free black woman, legitimately making Alice free too. She advises her daughter to be brave but is helpless to defend Alice from the cruel real world for all black people in the slave-holding American South. Alice’s mother also admits to cooperate with Dana inasmuch as it does not add expose herself and Alice, but her true preference is only her own family.
