Amaranta is the third child of José Arcadio Buendia and Ursula. Amaranta grew up with her second cousin Rebeca. When they simultaneously fall in love with the Italian Pietro Crespi, he reciprocates Rebeca, and since then they have become sworn enemies. In moments of hatred, Amaranth even tries to poison the rival. But, by mistake, poison Remedios Moscote. After Rebecca and José Arcadio got married, Amaranta lost all interest in the Italian. Later, Amaranth also rejects Colonel Gerineldo Marquez, left as a result of an old maid. She was in love and dreamed of having sex with her nephew Aureliano Jose and grand-nephew Jose Arkadio.
