She was the intelligent and strong girl who was in love with Beowulf for a long time. Also, she was a friend of Beowulf since childhood. A royal member of the Brondings, he and Beowulf engaged in a swimming contest against each other as adolescents, which Unferth claims Beowulf lost. It was not clear to the end who won that contest, although Unferth suggested that Breca beat Beowulf. Beowulf claimed that he and Breca were shoulder-to-shoulder, equally matched when it came to the swimming part—but he also killed nine sea monsters.
