Colonel Cathcart is a pronounced antagonist of the novel. He is fulfilled with numerous contradictions. Cathcart is very conceited, as he is already a colonel and a combat commander at his age. At the same time, he feels depressed that at the age of 36 he is only a colonel. As we can see, all he cares about is his career and rising in the military hierarchy. He is indifferent to his men and country. He is very suspicious, spleeny, and selfish. The only person he is close to and can rely on is his assistant, Korn.
