Constance Bonacieux

This other maternal figure is a fictional character, created entirely by Dumas. A linen maid for Anne of Austria, she is also the wife of Monsieur Bonacieux, young d’Artagnan’s landlord. She is kidnapped and saved by the future musketeer who falls in love with her. She personifies the good mother because, having been killed (after being poisoned by Milady) before beginning a relationship with d’Artagnan (her symbolic son), she avoids an incestuous relationship that would change this gentle image.
