Lydia Ivanovna is a representative of the influential society which can ruin somebody’s life. She tries to show everyone that she is deeply religious, but her deeds are sometimes cruel and dishonest. She is the one who lies to Seryozha that his mother Anna Karenina is dead. From her viewpoint, Karenin is the one who should be respected while Anna is an awful mother. Lydia Ivanovna judges people and scorns them for dishonest behavior. She is obsessed with religion and does everything possible to destroy the normal relationship between Karenin and Anna because the countess thinks that she has the right to decide how people should act.
