Ernest is a revolutionary leader that has some scruples. Being in awe of cruelty demonstrated by the aristocrats, he is often engaged in different subversive activities. However, his wife, Madame Defarge, does not believe in his power and strength. Such his attitude to the aristocrats' roots back to the times of his youth when he worked for Doctor Manette as a servant. Years later, Ernest became the owner of the wine shop that was located in Saint Antoine. The disbelief of Madame Defarge in her husband is not groundless since it seems that Ernest does not have a male character. Hence, he lacks particular traits needed to win any war or struggle.
