Escalus

The prince is the ruler of Verona. He monitors the order and implementation of laws in the city. He constantly intends to stop the violence amongst two fighting families. However, he remains powerless against real and strong love. The Escalus characterizes a higher strength and feels partly responsible for the tragedy. He takes control of the situation in his hands, suppressing all the signs of his personal loss in a series of these tragic events. Despite the fact that he is an absolute ruler of Verona, he lacks understanding and meaning, since his instructions do not suppress the enmity of families and violation in the city.
