Here we come to the very interesting person of Richard Bellingham. He served in our real life as governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Probably exactly because of him, we see that this story could be real. As a character, he doesn’t have a very big role or a huge amount of words, but his small lines nevertheless make a huge impact. He appeared once in the very beginning of the text when he and group of men tried to applicate Hester's punishment and again when Hester needs to find out whether the town leadership plans to take Pearl away from him. He makes a decision that Pearl has to be with mother.
