She is the mother of Rose Walls and Jim. She is a tall, strict and broad-shouldered woman with green eyes and a strong chin.
She became a teacher because she didn’t trust anyone else to educate her children. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse in a town called Yampi. Grandma Smith had strong opinions about the way things should be done - how to dress, to talk, to spend your time, to cook and keep house, how to manage the finances, etc. So, she strictly adhered to certain rules. Rose felt that Grandma Smith nagged and badgered her, setting rules and punishments for breaking the rules. It was the reason Rose never set rules for her children.
