This hero is Emily's romantic interest. He is rough-talking and charismatic Northerner. Nevertheless, people in the town were suspicious about his sexual orientation. It seemed very obvious to them that if Emily is thirty years old and she is not very pretty, only a gay would like to be with her. And only a woman who is that much desperate would like to choose a man who loves men. Later Homer is found dead and decomposed in Emily's bedroom after her funeral. And no one will never get it was love or not.
