Idek is in charge of Eliezer’s work unit at Buna. He has the reputation of occasionally going crazy, but the unit he’s in charge of is considered a good one to work in because the labor is light. Once, when Idek gets in one of his crazy moods, he beats Eliezer for no reason. Later, Idek does the same to Eliezer’s father. Eliezer doesn’t seem to hold this against Idek, maybe because Idek’s violence comes from a crazy, angry mood rather than a cold, calculated plan. However, Idek does have an eye for the Polish ladies, as Eliezer discovers to his chagrin.
