Jennie is John’s sister who helps the married couple to cope with the house chores. She likes helping with cleaning, looking after children, doing the washing-up. This contentment with the role of a typical woman irritates the narrator because she wants more from this life than being an ignorant wife. It seems that Jennie is supposed to understand the narrator because they are both women, but it doesn’t happen. These two ladies have a different attitude to life, and Jennie is satisfied with her female role, but the narrator cannot stand this stereotype of women who must be ideal wives and mothers.
