He is the narrator’s husband who helps her overcome depression but not in the best way. He decides to keep her in one room closed and alone. Here she starts to have these imaginative attacks. Although John seems to love her wife and care for her, he doesn’t put any extra efforts to listen to her and understand what bothers her. He sees the outer problem but doesn’t ask her about real worries. His ignorance shows that the relationship in such families is not built on mutual understanding but only cohabitation and benefit. When John finds his wife in insanity at the end, he is shocked and horrified.
