Juliek is a young man from Warsaw who played the violin in the Buna band, which is where Eliezer met him for the first time. Later he is transported with Eliezer to Buchenwald, but he dies in the barracks at Gleiwitz. The night he dies, he plays his violin. Keep in mind that he is playing Beethoven while so many other men are degraded to the basest parts of themselves, thinking only of themselves and their physical needs. Is he playing for himself, or is it an act of giving, reminding the other prisoners of their humanity?
