This lady is one of the greatest villains introduced by the author in the novel. The only thing that can be regarded as the distinguishing feature of this character is her desire to have revenge upon Marquis Evremonde for the sexual assault of her sister. This tragedy reflected on the whole her family resulting in the death of her brother and beloved father. In the attempt to fight in the cause of justice, Madame Defarge became ruthless and even steel-hearted. In the course of the novel, this woman did not express her humanity and compassion also concerning innocent children. The attempts to obtain justice by revenging the entire family of Evremonde turned her into an arrogant and cold-blooded woman.
