Nikolai is a sick Levin’ brother. He is a representative of liberal worldview having a strong connection to politics which helps him get distracted from thoughts about deteriorating illness. In the earlier age, Nicholas becomes involved in consuming alcohol and gambling. Ultimately, Nicholas dies, and this provokes his brother to think about the meaning of life. Nikolai’s death shows Kitty and Levin from new sides of their characters. They are reliable and sensitive at the same time. This situation shows them that life is short and they need to grasp happiness right now by getting married and living a happy life together.
