Sir Danvers Carew

Sir Danvers Carew is a very respected and prominent member of Victorian society who is brutally murdered by Hyde launching a police investigation.

He belonged to the middle or even upper class, was adhered to strict values, among which were a sense of duty and diligence; respectability: a mixture of morality and hypocrisy, rigor and adaptation to public standards (possession of good manners, comfortable home ownership, regular church attendance and charity); charity and philanthropy.

His family reigned with the patriarchal order. Sexuality was suppressed, feminity and hypocrisy were extremely common. Colonialism was also an important phenomenon, it led to the spread of patriotism and was influenced by ideas of racial superiority and the concept of a white man's mission.

Sir Danvers Carew believed that the rules of conduct and morality were very harsh, and their violations were strongly condemned. The serious corporal punishment was extremely widespread in families and educational institutions. Such phenomena as an affectation and excessive moderation, repression are considered important and very common features of the Victorian era.
