This character is a typical old woman, who come across various hard things and is still strong. She was born as the daughter of a Pope. She has hard experience in her life – her fiancé died, pirates raped her, he was a slave, and also she saw cannibalism in wartime. In the novel, she becomes Cunégonde’s servant. These hard life situations made her very cynical, he always has doubts about the good human nature and expects something bad from anyone. But she never feels self-indulgence. Life made her wise, practical, and loyal to her mistress. Also, even when she is close to ending this life, to commit suicide, she always finds the reason to continue living.
