Dante in the “Divine Comedy” is the main hero, the narrator, narrating from the first person. He is spiritually lost and forced to flee from the True Way. Due to the fact that he is spiritually weakened, his guide is sent to him. He is a spectator of the pictures of Hell and Paradise; from his eyes, the reader can see these pictures. Basically, Dante's role in the poem is outwardly passive. He obediently follows Virgilio in the circles of Hell. Virgilio shows him pictures of the terrible torment of sinful souls. Dante from time to time asks to clarify what he sees and what is happening around.
