He is a husband of Lucretia Anthony. According to the plot, he was a close friend of Douglass. As a character, he was not cruel as he aimed to make the life of slaves easier and happier. That is why a reader can notice author’s respect for him. Hugh Auld was a sheet anchor for Douglass as he taught him ABC and revealed the dishonest rules of the human existence. Nevertheless, the life of this personage was not full of bright moments that is why it is boring to read about his story. We can state that he is a type of secondary character of the novel.
