The Manager personifies the Company that is represented by him in the Congo. He is struggling to protect his position as he was sure Kurtz wanted to steal it from him. The Manager is a professional liar and did all possible not to let the despot reach the Inner Station. Marlow doesn’t believe in Manager’s genuineness despite his efforts to create a beautiful picture of reality.
The Manager uses all his possibilities to find out from Marlow everything about Kurtz. He doesn’t want to have competitors and couldn’t stand those who pretend to be. He thinks only about his interests.
