These three sentences are another quote from “1984” by George Orwell. They are engraved on the building where Ministry of Truth is situated. They seem absurdly controversial to the reader, especially if we think about the fact it is the official slogan of the Party (which the real political parties try to make as clear as possible to indicate their positions). We meet this quote several times - in the very beginning of the book as an epigraph and later, when it comes to Party propaganda. These words and confusion they cause in the mind of the reader introduce us the concept of doublethink, when the main virtue of the citizens is to accommodate in their head the completely opposite meanings at the same time and honestly believe in both. The fact that we, as non-Ingsoc people, have a hard time wrapping our mind around it, underlines the terrible changes in thinking the Party inflicted in people.
